Moving to Italy
Moving to Italy starts with the Alps. Whether your new home is in Milan, Tuscany or Puglia, a lorry from Wrocław has to cross the Austrian passes, which have some of the strictest traffic restrictions in Europe. On the other side come historic centres closed to vehicles and old buildings with no lift. 4RELO plans both parts of the route with equal care.
Over the Brenner or via Tarvisio
For north-west Italy we drive through the Czech Republic and Bavaria to Innsbruck, then over the Brenner Pass to Verona. For the north-east, towards Venice and Udine, the route via Vienna, Klagenfurt and the Tarvisio crossing is often more convenient.

Alpine restrictions and Italian weekends
- Night ban in Tyrol. Heavy vehicles may not drive through the Inn valley and over the Brenner at night, so the Alpine crossing has to fit into daytime hours.
- Lorry metering. On certain days Tyrol lets lorries in batches at the German border, which can add several hours of waiting. We check these days in advance.
- Road tolls. In Austria lorries pay for every kilometre, with a separate charge for the Brenner, and Italian motorways are tolled at barriers.
- Bans in Italy. On Sundays and public holidays, and on some Saturdays in summer, lorries over 7.5 t may not use Italian roads.
ZTL zones and street occupation permits
Most Italian cities protect their historic centres with limited traffic zones (ZTL). Entrances are monitored by cameras, and a vehicle without a permit gets a fine that arrives by post, sometimes months later. So for a move in Florence, Bologna or Rome you need an access permit, plus permission from the comune to temporarily occupy the street with a lorry or furniture lift.
Flats in old palazzi have inner courtyards, stone staircases and often a porter who should be told the date in advance. In hilltop towns in Tuscany and Liguria the streets are so narrow that we transfer your belongings to a small vehicle. We describe this work under additional services.
Formalities after arriving in Italy
Codice fiscale
The Italian tax code needed to rent a flat, sign up with an electricity supplier, open a bank account and work. You can get it before you leave.
Registering with the comune
If you stay longer than three months, you register on the municipal register of residents. The address is usually checked by the municipal police during a visit to your home.
Car
An Italian resident cannot drive a car on foreign plates for long, so re-registration should be planned right after you register your residence.
Furniture is moved from Poland to Italy within the EU, with no duty and no customs declaration. We confirm the delivery date before loading, and if you get the keys later, your belongings will wait in storage.
Italy – questions about your move
Who arranges the permit to enter a ZTL zone?
The application is made to the comune, usually with the vehicle registration number and the date. We provide all the details, and depending on the city either the resident or the company submits it.
How long does a move to Rome take?
Usually three days from leaving Wrocław, allowing for the night ban in Tyrol and the driver's breaks. At busy times on the Brenner it may take longer.
Can you carry furniture to a hillside house with no road access?
Yes, we transfer your belongings to a smaller vehicle and carry them the last stretch. We check access before the move using a map and photos.
Does a move to Italy require customs documents?
No, it is transport within the EU. A contract and an inventory are enough. Official paperwork concerns you, not your goods.
