Moving to Belgium
Belgium is one of the more common destinations for Poles moving abroad for work, and we carry out moves to Belgium both to large cities and to small towns in Flanders and Wallonia. 4RELO from Wrocław takes care of packing, transport and carrying in your furniture, and before departure we advise you on what needs to be done at the Belgian municipality after you arrive.
How far it is from Wrocław to Belgium
We drive to the Belgian border through Germany: on the motorway via Dresden and Erfurt, then via Cologne and Aachen. Belgium is small, so the differences between cities are minor, and the journey usually fits into two working days for the driver.
| Destination | Distance from Wrocław | Region and official language |
|---|---|---|
| Liège | about 1,000 km | Wallonia, French |
| Leuven | about 1,080 km | Flanders, Dutch |
| Brussels | about 1,100 km | capital region, bilingual |
| Antwerp | about 1,110 km | Flanders, Dutch |
| Ghent | about 1,160 km | Flanders, Dutch |
| Charleroi | about 1,120 km | Wallonia, French |
Belgium charges lorries a fee for every kilometre driven, and Antwerp, Ghent and Brussels have low-emission zones. We take both into account in the quote and in choosing the vehicle.
Formalities in Belgium after the move
Belongings moved from Poland to Belgium are not subject to customs duty or clearance, as both countries are in the EU. However, there are obligations that Belgium enforces quite strictly:
- Registering with the municipality. If you plan to stay longer than three months, you register at the municipal office within 8 days of arrival. A local police officer then visits the address to confirm that you actually live there.
- Residence card. Once the address has been verified, the municipality issues a residence document for EU citizens.
- Rental deposit. When renting, the deposit is usually paid into a blocked bank account, and the condition of the property is recorded when you move in and out.
- Car. A car used in Belgium by a resident must be registered with Belgian plates and insured with a local insurer.
Belgian terraced houses and furniture lifts
A typical house in Flanders is a narrow terrace with very steep stairs, where a three-door wardrobe does not stand a chance. Belgian companies have been bringing furniture in through windows for years, using furniture lifts set up in the street. If your description and photos show that one will be needed, we include it in the plan and, if necessary, help you get the municipality’s permission to use the pavement and a parking space.
Before you leave, it is worth going through your furniture. Some items are better dismantled while still in Poland, and large, inexpensive furniture is sometimes not worth moving. We will help you assess this when preparing the quote, and you can make an initial estimate of the volume with our calculator.

Questions about moving to Belgium
Do I need to be in Belgium on the day of the police officer’s visit?
The officer checks that you live at the address you gave, so ideally your belongings should already be there and your name on the letterbox. That is why many people plan their move before registering with the municipality.
Do you deliver to small towns, not just cities?
Yes, we reach any address in Belgium. On narrow country roads, we check in advance whether a large vehicle can get to the house.
Does a move to Belgium require customs documents?
No, it is transport within the European Union. A contract and an inventory are all you need.
What documents do I get from 4RELO?
A moving contract and a VAT invoice. Our business is covered by liability insurance up to PLN 500,000, and we discuss the scope of cover before transport.
