Moving in Bielawa
Bielawa stretches for several kilometres along a stream valley at the foot of the Owl Mountains. For more than a hundred years it was one of the most important centres of the textile industry in Silesia – the factories left behind brick halls, workers' tenements and large estates of blocks of flats. So moving in Bielawa covers very different jobs: from a fourth-floor flat with no lift to a house on a slope with a view of Wielką Sowa.
A long town with different access routes
It's about 60 kilometres from Wrocław to Bielawa – we drive through Dzierżoniów, and the whole journey usually takes an hour and a quarter. Within the town, though, what matters is which part the address is in. Lower Bielawa, closer to Dzierżoniów, is flat with good streets. The higher you go towards the mountains, the steeper it gets, and the last houses below the forest stand on narrow, winding access roads. In winter and during the thaw, this can decide which vehicle we arrive in.

Prefabricated housing estates
Tall blocks with lifts and lower ones without. The lift is often too small for a wardrobe or corner sofa, so we dismantle some furniture while still in the flat.
Workers' tenements
Buildings by the former spinning and weaving mills: steep wooden stairs, low passages, cramped courtyards. Here we work more slowly and carefully.
Houses on the slopes
Properties higher up the valley, often with a sloping driveway and steps to the entrance. We carry heavy items on straps and park the vehicle where it stands stable.
From Bielawa to Wrocław – the plan for the day
- Morning: the crew arrives, protects the stairwell and floors, and dismantles furniture.
- Late morning: packing fragile items and loading the vehicle.
- Early afternoon: the drive through Dzierżoniów to Wrocław.

Bielawa, Dzierżoniów and Pieszyce form a single area, and people often move short distances within it – from a block of flats to a house, or from their parents' house to a smaller flat. With a change of address like this, the kilometres matter little; the floor, the number of pieces of furniture to dismantle and access to the building count for more. We also cover villages on the other side of the mountains, although we plan access there separately.
