Moving to the Netherlands

For years, the Netherlands has been one of the main destinations for people leaving Lower Silesia. More and more often, it is no longer a seasonal trip with a suitcase, but moving an entire home – with furniture, bikes and the children’s things. Destinations in the Netherlands and driving times

To the northern Netherlands we drive via Berlin and Hanover, and to the south of the country via Dresden and Cologne. The country is flat and has a dense motorway network, so we reach most addresses within two working days for the driver.

Many Dutch cities have low-emission zones for lorries and vans. Access depends on the emission standard, so choosing the vehicle is a deliberate part of preparing the move, not a matter of chance.

Registration and the BSN number

We move belongings from Poland to the Netherlands with no customs duty or clearance. The most important formality awaits you on arrival, and it is worth thinking about it when choosing your moving date.

1. If you are staying in the Netherlands for more than four months, you must register at the municipal office (gemeente) within five days of arrival.
2. To register, you need an address and usually a tenancy agreement or the landlord’s consent. In big cities, you sometimes have to wait several weeks for an appointment, so it is worth booking early.
3. After registering, you receive a BSN number. Without it, it is hard to open a bank account, get Dutch health insurance or receive your salary.
4. A car used permanently by a resident of the Netherlands must be re-registered, and importing a car incurs a registration tax.

What to take and what to leave behind

Dutch flats are often smaller than Polish ones, and the stairs in older houses are steep and narrow. Before packing, it is worth checking the dimensions of your new home. Large corner sofas and heavy wardrobes are often better sold in Poland, taking only what you will really use. Returning from the Netherlands to Poland

We move belongings in the other direction just as often – after a few years of working in the Netherlands. When moving out, remember to deregister with the municipality before leaving, end your health insurance and hand back the flat in the condition recorded in the report.
