Moving in Zgorzelec

Zgorzelec and German Görlitz are essentially one town divided by the Lusatian Neisse – until 1945 they were a single whole, and today they are linked by bridges, joint initiatives and daily commutes to work on both sides of the river. From Wrocław, it is about 160 kilometres along the A4 motorway, roughly two hours' drive. Moving in Zgorzelec is therefore often a cross-border move: a few kilometres as the crow flies, but with a new country, new authorities and a new language on the other side.

Moving across the border on the Neisse

Poland and Germany are both in the Schengen Area, so moving from Zgorzelec to Görlitz does not require customs clearance or a declaration of your belongings. It is worth knowing, however, that temporary checks are sometimes reintroduced on the Polish-German border – lorries may be stopped for inspection, which makes the journey longer. That is why we always build extra time into the moving plan. On the German side, you will need to register at the local citizens' office (Bürgeramt) within two weeks of moving in and, if your car has Polish number plates, re-register it.

Housing on both sides of the river

Zgorzelec – town centre

Pre-war tenement buildings on streets leading down to the river, high floors with no lift, courtyards with gateways. We plan the carrying in and a parking spot before we arrive.

Zgorzelec – housing estates

Communist-era blocks of flats and newer buildings on the edge of town. This is where we most often move families leaving to work in Saxony or returning to Poland.

Görlitz

Historic old town with tenement buildings from many periods and streets with restricted traffic. Many flats are in renovated buildings, but with no lift and narrow stairs.

Not just Görlitz – further into Germany

From Zgorzelec, a straight road leads to Dresden, Leipzig and Berlin, and from there further west. We travel to Germany regularly, so we can offer a move not only to the town across the border, but also to Munich, Cologne or Frankfurt. If your new home is not available straight away, your belongings can wait in our warehouse in Frankfurt am Main. You will find the details in our international moving section and on the Frankfurt warehouse page.

Bogatynia, Turów and the surrounding area

The Zgorzelec district also includes Bogatynia with the Turów mine and power station, as well as Pieńsk and Węgliniec. Energy and industry workers move here from all over Poland, while local families increasingly relocate to Wrocław. We carry out such jobs in a single run along the A4, with no transfer along the way.

Zgorzelec – moving questions

Does a move to Görlitz involve customs formalities?

No. Both countries are in the European Union, so no customs duty or inventory of belongings is needed. After the move, you must register your address with the German authorities.

Will border checks make the move take longer?

They can, if temporary checks happen to be in place. That is why we give a delivery date with some leeway, and the crew carries the contract and an inventory of the goods being transported.

How long does a move from Zgorzelec to Wrocław take?

The drive along the A4 takes about two hours. We move a flat in one day, and a house with full packing in two.

Can you take my belongings from Zgorzelec further into Germany?

Yes. We travel to Germany regularly and, if needed, we will store your belongings in our warehouse in Frankfurt am Main.

Do you issue a VAT invoice for moves abroad too?

Yes. Every job is carried out under a contract with a VAT invoice and liability insurance of up to PLN 500,000. We are a member of FEDEMAC.
