Moving to South Korea

Polish companies and engineers are working with Korean industry more and more often – from automotive to energy and defence. Families follow the contract, and furniture follows the families. We prepare moves to South Korea in Wrocław: pre-move survey, packing, inventory and loading. The voyage, clearance and delivery to your flat in Seoul, Ulsan or Changwon are handled together with a partner from the FEDEMAC network.

Busan is Korea's main container port and has the most direct connections with Europe. Seoul is about 400 kilometres away, so for delivery to the capital we compare a voyage to Busan with overland transport against a voyage to Incheon.

A container to Korea most often departs from Hamburg or Bremerhaven, and the route runs through the Suez Canal and transshipment ports in South-East Asia.

Formalities in Korea

  • Declare unaccompanied baggage on your customs declaration on arrival – this makes later clearance without charges easier.
  • Prepare a copy of your passport with the entry stamp and your visa, e.g. for professionals.
  • After arrival you will get an alien registration card – our partner may ask for it.
  • An inventory in English, with values and a description of the boxes.
  • Your belongings should arrive within a set time after your arrival – we confirm the deadline before shipping.

The exemption covers used personal belongings and household contents. New items, larger quantities of alcohol and tobacco products are subject to charges. We do not pack food, especially meat and dairy.

High-rise blocks and ladder lifts

Most homes in Seoul and other large cities are on estates of high-rise blocks. Moves there are done in a distinctive way: a truck with a boom and platform parks below the block, and furniture and boxes go up and in through a window or balcony, even a dozen or more floors up. This requires notifying the estate management, and in some buildings also paying a fee for use of the lift or the space below the block. Our partner arranges this equipment for delivery day.

Flats on housing estates

Standard floor areas, built-in wardrobes, underfloor heating. It is worth putting pads under heavy furniture with legs to avoid damaging the floor.

Flats in Ulsan and Changwon

Industrial cities in the south, close to Busan. The drive from the port is short, which shortens delivery time.

What to take and what to leave

The voltage in Korea is 220 V and the sockets are similar to European ones, so most equipment from Poland will work. Size is more often the issue: wide wardrobes and corner sofas do not always fit into flats with built-in furniture. For a shorter contract, choose a shared container and leave your furniture in our storage. You can check the volume in the calculator, and read more about shipping options under container moving.

South Korea – questions

How long does a move from Wrocław to Seoul take?

Usually seven to ten weeks from packing to delivery, including clearance and transport from the port.

Is a ladder lift safe for furniture?

Yes, it is the standard method in Korea. Furniture travels protected and strapped down, and the crew upstairs takes it in through the window.

Do I need to be in Korea when the container arrives?

Usually yes – clearance of household effects requires the owner to already be in the country.

Is it quicker to Ulsan via Busan?

Yes. Ulsan is a few dozen kilometres from Busan, so delivery after clearance is short.
