Moving in Śródmieście, Wrocław

Śródmieście is Wrocław on the right bank of the Oder: the tenement buildings of Nadodrze and Ołbin, the university area around Plac Grunwaldzki and, further east, leafy Biskupin, Sępolno and Zalesie. In one district you will find a fourth floor with no lift on Jedności Narodowej Street and a house with a garden by Szczytnicki Park. Moving in Śródmieście, Wrocław therefore calls for two different approaches – one for a cramped tenement and one for a spacious villa.

Tenement buildings in Nadodrze and Ołbin

Pre-war tenement buildings have high ceilings, which means more steps between floors than in a block of flats. Stairwells are often narrow, with tight turns at the half-landings, and the entrance frequently leads through a gateway and a well-like courtyard that a vehicle can't get into. On top of that, there is on-street parking, taken up by residents from the evening onwards. For addresses like these, we ask straight away about the width of the gateway, the floor, and whether the flat is entered from the front building or the rear annexe.

How to prepare for a move from a tenement building

1. Check whether the street is in the paid parking zone and whether a parking space needs to be reserved.
2. Let your neighbours know the date – in a narrow stairwell, boxes and furniture will temporarily block the way.
3. Measure your largest furniture and the turn of the stairwell at the tightest half-landing.
4. Agree with the property manager whether the gate can stay open while we carry things.
5. Empty the cellar in advance, because in old tenement buildings the way down is often low and steep.

Plac Grunwaldzki and the university area

The area around Plac Grunwaldzki and Curie-Skłodowskiej Street is full of student flats, short-term lets and tall blocks from the 1970s. Moves here are smaller in volume but frequent, especially at the end of September and between semesters. For tall buildings, we ask about the lift dimensions, and for rented flats, about which furniture belongs to the landlord and stays put.

Biskupin, Sępolno, Zalesie and Dąbie

The eastern part of Śródmieście is made up of villas, inter-war terraced houses and gardens. Sępolno was built as an estate of houses with small gardens, and Zalesie and Biskupin have grand villas. Here the floor is less often an obstacle – more often it is outdoor steps, narrow entrances to old houses and streets where you have to watch out for parked cars and trees. For large, fully furnished houses, we plan the move over two days.
