Moving to Berlin
Berlin is closer to Wrocław than Warsaw is. Around 350 kilometres of motorway is a distance that lets us load a flat in Krzyki in the morning and carry the furniture into a home in Prenzlauer Berg in the afternoon. Moving to Berlin is one of our most frequent routes – we travel there regularly and know the city’s quirks, which matter more at unloading than the journey itself.
The Wrocław – Berlin route
We take the A4 motorway to the Krzyżowa junction, then the A18 to the Olszyna – Forst border crossing. On the German side, the A15 leads to Cottbus, from where the A13 takes us onto the A10 Berlin ring road. The drive itself takes about four and a half hours by van. Getting into the centre at rush hour can take the most time, so we plan our departure to enter the city before the afternoon traffic.

Tenements with rear buildings
In Kreuzberg, Neukölln or Friedrichshain, a flat is often in a rear building (Hinterhaus), reached through a gateway and a courtyard. The vehicle parks on the street, and the furniture has to be carried through one or two courtyards, usually up to the fourth floor with no lift.
Prefab blocks of flats
Marzahn, Hellersdorf and Lichtenberg are estates with lifts and wide access roads. Unloading is quick here, but the lifts are often small and will not take a wardrobe in one piece.
New developments
On new estates, for example around the former Tegel airport or in Adlershof, the building manager often requires the lift to be booked and its walls protected before furniture is carried in.
The low-emission zone and parking outside your building
The whole area inside the S-Bahn ring is a low-emission zone (Umweltzone) that only vehicles with a green sticker may enter. The second issue is parking. A temporary no-stopping zone for moving day is issued by the district office responsible for the address (Bezirksamt). The application must be submitted well in advance, and the signs put up several days beforehand. Anmeldung in Berlin
After moving, you have two weeks to register at any Bürgeramt in Berlin. Free slots in the office’s booking system can be a long way off, so it is worth booking an appointment as soon as you know your move-in date. Can a move from Wrocław to Berlin be done in one day?
For a flat with up to three rooms, usually yes. Larger homes and rear buildings with no lift are planned over two days, with loading the day before.
Who applies for the no-stopping zone outside the building?
