Moving to Sweden
Sweden lies just across the Baltic, so moves to Sweden from Wrocław usually start at the coast – in Świnoujście, Gdynia or Gdańsk, from where ferries sail to several Swedish ports. Which ferry to Sweden
Świnoujście–Ystad or Trelleborg
Świnoujście is just over 400 km from Wrocław along the S3. The overnight crossing takes a few hours, and in the morning the load is in Skåne. The best choice for Malmö, Lund, Helsingborg and Gothenburg.
Gdynia–Karlskrona
A longer drive on the Polish side, but the ferry arrives on the east coast. A good option for addresses in Blekinge, Kalmar and Småland.
Gdańsk–Nynäshamn
The longest crossing, but the port is close to Stockholm. The lorry does not have to cross the whole of Sweden from south to north.
There is also an option with no ferry from Poland: through Germany and Denmark, then over the Øresund Bridge from Copenhagen to Malmö. It is useful when sailing times do not match the loading day.

Personnummer and Swedish authorities
A move from Poland to Sweden involves no customs duty or clearance. The key formality is registering on the Swedish population register with the Tax Agency. If you are staying for at least a year, you receive a personnummer – a number without which it is hard to open a bank account, get an electronic BankID, sign an internet contract or enrol a child at nursery. For shorter stays the agency issues a coordination number with more limited use. A decision can take several weeks, so it is worth applying straight after arrival.
Winter, your car and city charges
- From December to March, in winter conditions, lorries must have winter tyres – we plan the journey around the weather, especially in the north.
- Stockholm and Gothenburg charge for entering the centre, and this also applies to foreign vehicles.
- A car brought in permanently must be registered with the Swedish Transport Agency, which requires a check of the vehicle's origin.
- Housing cooperative flats have rules set by the owners' association, covering things such as the lift and working hours.
