How we move an instrument

When preparing the quote, we ask about the type of instrument, its dimensions, the floors and the shape of the stairwell at both ends.
Before carrying it out, we close and secure the keyboard lid.
We wrap the instrument in blankets and film, with extra protection on the corners.
On the stairs, we move it on carrying straps, step by step, with one person spotting from below.
In the vehicle, the piano stands against the side of the load space and is strapped in, with no other heavy items next to it.
At the destination, we place the instrument where you want it and unwrap it in front of you.

Away from the radiator

Warm, dry air dries out the wood of the soundboard and puts the instrument out of tune faster than anything else.

Not by the window

Direct sunlight fades the polish, and draughts cause swings in temperature and humidity.

Against an internal wall

External walls can be colder, especially in older tenement buildings and uninsulated houses.

Tuning after the move

Even the most careful transport changes the conditions the instrument lives in: a different temperature, different humidity, a different room. Piano tuners usually advise waiting a few weeks for the piano to acclimatise to its new home before tuning it. Tuning is not part of our work, but we are happy to advise you on when to schedule it.

An instrument as part of a bigger move

Most often, the piano travels together with the rest of the flat. In that case we plan it as a separate stage of the day – carrying it out while the stairwell is empty, and carrying it in first, before the hallway fills up with boxes. If you are moving to another country, the instrument can travel as part of an international move, and if your new home isn't ready, it can wait in our warehouse. The transport is documented with a contract and a VAT invoice, and the instrument is protected by our liability insurance.

Piano transport – questions

Can you carry a piano up to the fourth floor without a lift?

Yes, as long as the stairwell lets the instrument get round the turns. That is why we ask about its width and shape, and if in doubt, we take a look before the date.

Will the piano fit in the lift?

In older blocks of flats, the lifts are usually too small. In newer buildings with wide lifts it can be possible – we need the dimensions of the cabin.

Do you move grand pianos?

Yes. A grand piano needs its legs and pedal lyre removed and has to travel on its side, which is why we quote for it individually.

Will you move just the piano, without any other furniture?

Yes, it is a common job – for example when buying a second-hand instrument or moving one to a music school.

When should I tune the piano after the move?

The usual advice is to wait a few weeks for the instrument to adjust to its new room.
