Moving to Vienna
Vienna tops the rankings of the most liveable cities every year, and for many Poles it is also a place of work at international organisations, hospitals, construction firms and universities. Moves to Vienna from Wrocław go through the Czech Republic, not Germany, and it is one of the few international routes where no single motorway links the two cities all the way – part of the journey is on expressways and ordinary roads through the Sudetes.
The road from Wrocław to Vienna, step by step
- The S8 to Kłodzko and on to the Kudowa-Zdrój – Náchod crossing.
- Via Hradec Králové and Svitavy to Brno.
- From Brno, south on the D52 motorway, past Mikulov to the Austrian border at Drasenhofen.
- The Austrian A5 and S1 to Vienna’s northern districts.
That is about 480 kilometres and six hours by van. In practice, we organise a flat move to Vienna like this: loading in Wrocław in the afternoon, departure early in the morning and unloading before noon. That way we enter the city after the morning rush and have the whole day for carrying in.
Viennese buildings from a mover’s point of view
Altbau
Tenement buildings from before the First World War in districts such as Josefstadt or Neubau have ceilings over three metres high, wide stairwells and often lifts added in the stairwell shaft – too small for a wardrobe, but big enough for boxes.
Gemeindebau
Municipal housing, home to a large share of Vienna’s residents. Large courtyards and many entrances, so before unloading we work out which gateway is closest to the flat.
New districts
Seestadt Aspern and the area around the main railway station have new buildings with lifts and garages. Building managers often require the moving date to be notified in advance.
Parking outside the building and the parking zone
In Vienna, paid parking applies in all districts, and kerbside spaces are taken all day. For moving day, you apply to the city council for a temporary no-stopping and no-parking zone, and the signs must be put up well in advance. We advise you on how to prepare the application and how long a section to reserve for our vehicle.
Meldezettel in Vienna
You register within three days at one of the registration offices at the district councils. The form must be signed by the owner or manager of the flat, so it is best to have it ready on moving day. Viennese cellars and attics
In old tenement buildings, a flat often comes with a storeroom in the cellar or attic. Items that are going there are marked with a separate colour while packing in Wrocław, so that in Vienna they can be taken straight to the right place instead of being moved twice.

A small studio flat – yes. For a two- or three-room flat, we plan loading the day before, so there is time in Vienna to carry everything in calmly.
Do you cover the area around Vienna?
Yes – Klosterneuburg, Mödling, Baden, Schwechat and other towns in Lower Austrią, as well as nearby Bratislava.
Can you store my belongings before delivery to Vienna?

Will you carry furniture up to a high floor in a tenement building?
Yes. Floors in Viennese tenements are tall, so the fourth floor often corresponds to the fifth or sixth in a modern building – we take this into account when deciding the size of the crew.
