Moving to Luxembourg
Luxembourg is small, but moving there is rarely simple when it comes to timing. Flats are scarce, prices are high and a tenancy often starts on exactly the same day as a new job. 4RELO from Wrocław has an advantage here: our warehouse in Frankfurt am Main is around 250 kilometres from Luxembourg, so your belongings can wait close to their destination until the flat is ready.
Who moves to Luxembourg
Most of our customers work in the financial sector, at audit firms and at the European institutions on the Kirchberg plateau: the Court of Justice, the European Investment Bank or Eurostat. Many of them work in Luxembourg but live across the border – in Germany, France or Belgium, where housing is cheaper. We deliver to all of these addresses.
| Where you will live | Country | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Luxembourg City | Luxembourg | steep old-town streets, parking space must be reserved |
| Esch-sur-Alzette | Luxembourg | the country's second city, easier lorry access |
| Trier, Perl | Germany | closest to the route from Poland, registration at a German local office |
| Thionville, Metz | France | French tenancy rules and a property condition report |
| Arlon | Belgium | registration with the Belgian municipality and a visit from a police officer |
The route via Frankfurt
From Wrocław we drive via Dresden and Frankfurt, then on towards Trier – around a thousand kilometres in total, or two days on the road. If notice is short or the key handover date is uncertain, we take the load to our warehouse in Frankfurt am Main. Delivery from there to Luxembourg takes a few hours, so you can choose the unloading day once everything is confirmed.
Formalities in the Grand Duchy
- No customs duty. Furniture and personal belongings are moved from Poland within the European Union, with no customs declaration.
- Declaring your arrival. An EU citizen staying longer than three months reports their arrival at the local municipal office within eight days.
- Registration certificate. Within three months of arrival you apply for a certificate of registration of residence.
- Car. A Luxembourg resident's car must be registered on local plates, which involves a roadworthiness test.
- Official languages. Luxembourgish, French and German – documents are most often issued in French.
Small flats, high expectations
Flats in Luxembourg are usually smaller than salaries would suggest, and new buildings have house rules on lift use and working hours. Before packing we help you decide what to take. Some items can stay in storage for longer and be delivered later, once you move somewhere bigger. You can check the volume of your load in the calculator.
In the old part of the capital, in the Grund and Pfaffenthal districts, the streets are steep and winding. There we plan unloading with a smaller vehicle and a reserved space in town.
Luxembourg – your questions answered
Can I store my belongings in Frankfurt before delivery to Luxembourg?
Yes. We have our own warehouse in Frankfurt am Main. Your belongings wait there until the agreed day, and then we deliver them to your address in Luxembourg or the border area.
I live in France and work in Luxembourg. Does that change anything?
Not for transport. The formalities do change: you register in your country of residence, France, and local tenancy rules apply there.
Can you prepare a quote for my employer to reimburse?
Yes, the free quote sets out the scope of work and the volume of goods, and after the move we issue a VAT invoice.
How quickly can you come?
That depends on the date and the volume. At short notice our Frankfurt warehouse helps, because loading in Poland does not have to coincide with your move-in day.
A job in Luxembourg, but no flat confirmed yet?
We will collect your belongings in Poland and store them in Frankfurt until you get the keys.
