Moving to Leipzig

For over a decade, Leipzig has been one of the fastest-growing cities in Germany. It attracts people with car factories and logistics centres by the airport, its university, and rents lower than in Berlin or Munich. Moving to Leipzig from Wrocław is a slightly longer route than to Dresden, but it still fits into one long working day if the day is well organised.

The road via Dresden

From Wrocław, we take the A4 to the border at Jędrzychowice and on across Saxony to Dresden. At the Nossen junction, we turn onto the A14, which leads north-west straight to Leipzig. In total, that is about 380 kilometres and four hours by van. The alternative via the A13 and Berlin is longer, and we only use it when there is major disruption on the A4 near Dresden.

Gründerzeit tenements

Connewitz, Südvorstadt, Plagwitz and Gohlis are districts of 19th-century tenement buildings, mostly renovated. High ceilings will take large wardrobes, but wooden stairwells with no lift mean carrying things up to the fourth or fifth floor.

Grünau

The city’s largest prefab housing estate. The buildings have lifts and vehicle access is simple, although at the longer blocks the distance from the car park to the entrance can be considerable.

Former factories and lofts

In Plagwitz and Lindenau, converted industrial halls have goods lifts or wide staircases, but also unusual entrances from the courtyard. We check them before giving a quote.

When it pays to split the move over two days

We move a studio or two-room flat in one day: leaving Wrocław early in the morning and unloading in Leipzig in the afternoon. For a house, full packing or a fifth-floor flat with no lift, we pack and load the day before and drive to Leipzig the next morning. The crew is then well rested, and carrying in does not drag on into the evening. Official matters

In Leipzig, you can register at the city’s citizens’ office within two weeks of moving in. Free appointments in the centre go quickly, so it is worth booking one before you leave Poland. You will find a list of the other formalities in our description of moving to Germany.
