A parking space outside the building – how to arrange a place to stop on moving day

White moving van and a parking space marked with cones in front of a block of flats

The most common cause of delays

Moves are rarely delayed by the transport itself. Far more often it starts with there being nowhere to stop by the entrance. Every extra fifty metres between the van and the door means another ten minutes or more on each trip with a piece of furniture.

A space can be reserved, but the rules depend on whose road it is. There are three cases, and in each of them somebody else gives the permission.

1. A public road

A city street is a road strip managed by a municipal body – in Wrocław this is the Zarząd Dróg i Utrzymania Miasta, the city roads and maintenance authority. Occupying part of the carriageway or the pavement temporarily requires an application and a formal decision, and a fee is charged for the occupation according to rates set by the city council.

  • The application is filed in advance – the office has time to issue its decision, so the day before the move is already too late.
  • The application states the exact place, the area and the days of occupation.
  • The decision is a document: it is worth having it with you on moving day.

2. A paid parking zone

In a paid parking zone there is a second element: reserving particular parking bays for a given day and given hours. The procedure is similar, it is filed with the same municipal body, and the fee is charged for each bay taken.

3. An internal estate road

Car parks by housing co-operative blocks and on developer-built estates are most often internal roads. The city does not manage them, so permission is given by the management: the co-operative, the residents’ association or the property manager. In practice a phone call and an email a few days ahead are enough; sometimes the manager puts out cones or posts a notice in the stairwell.

What works and what does not

  • It works to put your own car in the space the evening before – in the morning you simply drive it away and the van with the crew takes its place.
  • It works to put a note in the stairwell with the date and time. Neighbours usually have nothing against it if they know in advance.
  • It does not work to merely put out cones or tape on a public road – that carries no force at all and nobody has to respect it.
  • It does not work to block a driveway or a disabled parking bay, not even for fifteen minutes.

What we need from you

When quoting we ask about access, because it genuinely affects how long the work takes: the width of the road, the height of the gateway into the courtyard, the distance from the entrance, barriers, quiet hours, weight limits. This information decides which vehicle we bring and how many people we send.

If there is simply no space, we plan the work differently: a smaller van shuttling to a larger one parked further away.

Not sure whether a removal van will fit outside your building? Describe the access when you ask for a quote – we will match the vehicle to the space, not the other way round.
