Transporting Single Pieces of Furniture Abroad – When Does a Shared Load Pay Off?

Not every move is a whole flat. Sometimes you just need to send a sofa to a son in Hamburg, a set of furniture bought in Poland to a house near Utrecht, or ten boxes left over from studying in Vienna. Booking a whole van for that doesn't make sense — that's what combined transport is for, also called a shared load.

The idea is simple: several orders for the same direction travel in one van, and everyone pays for the space they use. Below, when this pays off, and when it's better to top up for a dedicated transport.

When a shared load is the best choice

  • You have anywhere from one to a dozen or so cubic metres — single pieces of furniture, boxes, equipment.
  • Your date is flexible: it could be this week, it could be next.
  • The direction is popular: Germany, the Netherlands, Czechia, Austria, Belgium, France.
  • Your items can be secured properly — they travel next to someone else's cargo, so packaging matters.
  • Pickup and delivery can happen within a time window, not at an exact minute.

When it's better to book a whole van

When the date is fixed

Handing over the keys, the end of a lease, the first day of work — if the date can't move, dedicated transport is the only sure solution. A shared load only sets off once a full load for that direction has come together.

When there's a lot of stuff

Above roughly twenty cubic metres, the price difference shrinks, and a dedicated van gives a shorter delivery time and fewer transshipments.

When the items are valuable or unusual

A piano, musical equipment, paintings, antique furniture — for these, we avoid transshipments, so they travel separately, with protection prepared for that specific item.

Not sure if your things are three cubic metres or ten? Work it out in the calculator or just list them in the form below.

We'll reply with a price for a shared load and for a whole van — you can compare for yourself.

How to prepare your things for a shared load

  1. Everything in boxes or wrapped. Loose items in combined transport are asking to get bumped — someone else's cargo sits right next to them.
  2. Label every package with a name and the destination address. With several orders in one van, this is essential.
  3. Make an inventory. A sheet listing the number of packages and their contents doubles as a handover report.
  4. Disassemble furniture where possible — it takes up less space, which means you pay less.
  5. Photos before sending for the more valuable items. If there's ever a claim, there's no argument.

How long it takes

Dedicated transport to Germany or the Netherlands is a single day's drive — loading today, unloading tomorrow. A shared load takes longer, because the van waits for a full load and usually makes several stops along the way. In practice, that's a few days to two weeks, depending on the direction.

On the routes we run regularly, the timing is shorter and more reliable — that's why, when asked about a shared load, we always give the nearest realistic departure, not a general promise.

Furniture transport abroad – frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to transport one piece of furniture to Germany?

The price depends on volume, direction and whether pickup is from a flat or from outside a building. A single sofa is usually a few cubic metres — with a shared load, that's exactly what you pay for, not for a whole van.

Do you collect items from the door?

Yes. We can also carry things in and out, but with a shared load this has to be agreed at the time of booking, since it affects how long the van stops at a given point.

Can I send items bought in a Polish shop?

Yes, that's a common case — furniture bought in Poland, delivered to our warehouse, travels to the customer abroad together with other cargo.

What about insurance with combined transport?

Carrier's liability applies, and for more valuable items we arrange cargo insurance based on the value from the inventory. With a shared load, the inventory matters even more, since there's more than one order in the van.
